Redundant Array of Independent Disks, or RAID, is a method of storing content on a number of hard disk drives at the same time. A RAID can be software or hardware depending on the hard drives that are used - physical or logical ones, but what’s common between them is the fact that they all function as one single unit where information is kept. The top advantage of employing a RAID is redundancy because the information on all of the drives shall be the same all of the time, so even if a drive fails for whatever reason, the info will still be present on the remaining drives. The overall performance will also improve since the reading and writing processes will be split between different drives, so a single one won't be overloaded. There're different types of RAIDs where the performance and fault tolerance may differ depending on the exact setup - whether data is written on all of the drives real-time or it is written on a single drive and after that mirrored on another, what number of drives are used for the RAID, etcetera.

RAID in Cloud Hosting

All the content which you upload to your new cloud hosting account will be held on fast SSD drives which operate in RAID-Z. This configuration is built to work with the ZFS file system that runs on our cloud Internet hosting platform and it adds an additional level of security for your site content in addition to the real-time checksum validation that ZFS uses to ensure the integrity of the data. With RAID-Z, the data is saved on a number of disks and at least 1 is a parity disk - whenever data is recorded on it, an extra bit is added, so if any drive stops working for whatever reason, the integrity of the information can be verified by recalculating its bits based on what is kept on the production disks and on the parity one. With RAID-Z, the functioning of our system will not be interrupted and it will continue functioning effectively until the faulty drive is changed and the data is synchronized on it.

RAID in Semi-dedicated Servers

If you host your websites within a semi-dedicated server account from our firm, any content you upload will be stored on SSD drives which work in RAID-Z. With this form of RAID, at least 1 of the drives is employed for parity - when data is synced between the drives, an extra bit is added to it on the parity one. The purpose behind this is to ensure the integrity of the information that is duplicated to a brand new drive if one of the disks in the RAID fails since the site content being copied on the brand new disk is recalculated from the data on the standard hard drives and on the parity one. Another advantage of RAID-Z is the fact that even in case a drive stops functioning, the system can easily switch to a different one right away without service interruptions of any sort. RAID-Z adds an extra level of protection for the content which you upload on our cloud hosting platform in addition to the ZFS file system that uses unique checksums in order to authenticate the integrity of each file.

RAID in VPS Servers

All VPS server accounts that we provide are created on physical servers which take advantage of SSD drives functioning in RAID. At least one drive is used for parity - one extra bit is included in the data duplicated on it and if a main disk fails, this bit makes it much simpler to recalculate the bits of the files on the failed hard disk so that the correct data is recovered on the new drive included in the RAID. In the mean time, your websites will remain online as all the information will still load from at least one other disk drive. In case you add routine backups to your VPS plan, a copy of the info will be stored on standard hard drives which also work in RAID since we want to make certain that any content you upload will be protected all the time.
